I imagine when most teachers hear the words “instructional design,” they may ask themselves what exactly does that mean? I know I did when I was considering what would be the next course I should take through Cape Breton University. I came across the course: EDUC 5103 - Integration of Instructional Design and Information Technology. The course description discussed investigating “instructional design concepts and learning theory which are utilized in the integration of educational software.” I still was not exactly sure what was meant by instructional design. I mean I had some idea, but not a real handle on it. I did wonder whether this was a useful course for the teacher on the frontlines each and every day. But then I read the third line which stated: “Instruction in both the effective use of software to enhance teaching and in techniques involved in incorporating this across the curriculum will be given.” Now that sounded like a practical notion to me! As a teacher involved in courses like Journalism, Media Studies, Writing, and Broad Based Technology, I am always using technology with my students. Thus began my educational journey in the course, Integration of Instructional Design and Information Technology.
